“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” John 5:39-40
Now let me just start off by saying that I am not saying that we shouldn’t read our bibles! What I’m saying is, is that knowing the bible isn’t knowing Jesus Christ.
You see many of us have deceived ourselves into believing that we are “saved” just because we set time aside to read the bible everday.
Do not be deceived. Not even by your own head knowledge, it takes a lot more than knowing scriptures to inherit the kingdom of God!
“For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”
It’s like everyone’s a scholar. Everyone has “bible knowledge” but no one has had an encounter with the living Christ!
I spent YEARS going to church and studying the bible and I can assure you now that I did not know Jesus.
It was all in my mind. There was no real fruit in my life. I didnt have anything but notes to show for my “quiet time”.
Reading the bible can become idle and fruitless when all you’re doing is hoarding the information.
There are a lot of lazy and unproductive people claiming to be Christians because they’ve learned the bible but they have not met Jesus!
We are like servants. We should be laboring in the fields—not sitting around highlighting scriptures and watching sermons all day (everyday) until Jesus appears! And that doesn’t necessarily mean you need a public platform or “ministry” but it does mean you’ve layed down your own desires to follow him and represent the kingdom of God, accurately.
The bible has become an idol
And I’m sure some of you would agree while others are too proud or offended to even consider what I’m saying. And that’s the whole point! We have to be careful that we aren’t exalting mere paper.
You should not feel a sense of security from reading (or knowing) the bible. The bible can not save you, only Jesus gives life.
And don’t get me wrong, the bible is all true and edifying but if you don’t have the holy ghost your understanding will be carnal.
You will read the scriptures and make them all about you and your personal agenda when the holy Spirit reveals how they’re all about Jesus!
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”
And speaking of personal agendas..
There is nothing more disgusting and annoying than someone who thinks that they are credible just because they’ve been to seminary. The wisdom of this world is foolishness to God ( 1 Corinthians 3:19) and wisdom that is competitive or ambitious is demonic (James 3:13-16).
Thats right, studying the bible can also become the pride of life! So don’t think for one second that reading it makes you of God.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
1 John 2:15-16
You can tell when someone who studies the bible doesn’t truly know God because ultimately, they’re just carnal and have no fear of Him at all.
“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”
So to wrap all of this up, I’m glad you read the bible but I’m more concerned about people truly knowing Jesus.
